ONOMATOPOEIA doesn't sound like a sound

Definition:

Words that sound similar to how they are described.

Example:

The snake hissed at me when I tried to touch it, it didn't like me close to it.

The word hiss sound like the hissing of a snake.

Why is it important in Language Arts?

Onomatopoeia helps the reader to understand the sound of the word without describing it, just like my example, which is hiss.
