ASSONANCE

Definition:

The repetition of vowel sounds in words that are chose together to create rhyming.

Example:
And frightful a nightfall folded rueful a day
Nor rescue, only rocket and lightship, shone,
And lives at last were washing away:
To the shrouds they took,—they shook in the hurling and horrible airs.
    Is out with it! Oh,
We lash with the best or worst
    Word last! How a lush-kept plush-capped sloe
    Will, mouthed to flesh-burst,
Gush!—flush the man, the being with it, sour or sweet,
Brim, in a flash, full!—Hither then, last or first.

Lyric poems are different from narratives, they don't tell stories but they express deep thoughts and feelings of the poet, and they tend to contain a very strong emotion.

"I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,
And Mourners to and fro
Kept treading - treading - till it seemed
That Sense was breaking through -
And when they all were seated,
A Service, like a Drum -
Kept beating - beating - till I thought
My Mind was going numb -  And then I heard them lift a Box
And creak across my Soul
With those same Boots of Lead, again,
Then Space - began to toll,
As all the Heavens were a Bell,
And Being, but an Ear,
And I, and Silence, some strange Race
Wrecked, solitary, here -
And then a Plank in Reason, broke,
And I dropped down, and down -
And hit a World, at every plunge,
And Finished knowing - then -"

Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred."

METER is not like measuring

Definition:

The rhythmic order of a verse. Meter is when the stresses occur in a regular pattern.

Example:

u / u / u / u / u / Iambic: Shall I compare thee to a summers day

RHYTHM is like rhyme

Why is it important in Language Arts?

Symbol helps the readers understand the significance of the special place, person, object or event, understand about the history and why was it chosen to be a symbol. In fictions, the symbol might be a very important part of the author's life and he/she wants to express it through words.

TONE comes from your mouth

Definition:

Feelings about a certain subject, like a person, an object or through questions in poems that are implied for the reader.

Example:

Around me are pirates,

Around pirates are the oceans,

Surrounding us are the tension,

I couldn't move, they'd shoot.

Their captain with an eye-patch and the sailors with angry looks.

I stand alone, I won't care.

I hear the gentle voice, I jump out,

Mommy is calling for cookies!

The tone of the poem above at first is tension, later on humorous.

The analysis, finding or explanation about the meaning of literature or art, like a poem or an essay.

Today’s lessons will help you go ahead in the raceYou are special; you mean the world to me
You are my daughter, a reflection of my entity

Every year, as I watch you grow by my side
No matter what you do, you are my source of pride

The umbilical cord may have been cut but you should know
You are still bound to my soul, wherever you go

Sometimes I am firm and you may think I am wrong
Remember it is easy to give in, but tough to be strong

Sometimes I am strict and you may think it is unfair
But I correct you only because I love and care

I harden my heart and nag, scold and fight
To teach you the difference between the wrong and the right

For soon, the days will pass swiftly all in a whirl
And into a woman will grow my baby girl

Tomorrow when you need inner strength above all

I hope my values will give you the courage to stand tall
I hope that in my teaching you will find tips few

Soon when you strive to make your dreams come true
At a later date, when the real world you have to face

Some day in the future when a mother you will be
From my point of view, the world you will see

For your baby then you will do what is bestTo blend discipline with kindness is every mom’s test

SONNETS are deep and meaningful

Definition:

A type of poem that uses 14 lines with a rhyme scheme to express a complete thought, idea, or an opinion.

Example:

Talking to myself there
Someone had overheard.
I was lost for a word.
There was nothing to share.
Embarrassed I was there.
Left awkward and absurd .
A broken wingless bird.
With nowhere to fly there.
Caught red faced there was I.
Didn't want to be seen.
I just wanted to die.
I just wanted to scream.
I'm so terribly shy.
Lost for words it would seem.

That is an example from Red Blushed and All Cut Up by Paul McCann, it consists of 14 lines with a rhyme scheme and is expressing feelings.

ELEGIES are sad, aren't it?

Up there is an example elegy by Thomas Gray.

Why is it important in Language Arts?

It is not growing like a tree

A Lily of a day
Is fairer far, in May
Although it fall and die that night;
It was the plant and flower of light.
In small proportions we just beauties see;
And in short measure, life may perfect be.

Up there is the Ode to Sir Lucius Gray and Sir H. Morison by Ben Jonson.

What do you know about COUPLET?

Definition:

Couplet is a fancy word for two lines of poetry of equal length, one after the other. Sometimes it's necessary for rhyming, sometimes it's not necessary for rhyming.

Example:
  •  Oh how the sun come shining above/Showering me with a sky full of dove.
  • People say madness is not the cure/And I think either is being pure.
  • I hate homework so much, it drives me crazy/But I think not doing them, is called being lazy.
Why is it important in Language Arts?

Couplet is the most common thing people would learn in Language Arts, it helps people get familiar with poetry and rhyming.

PERSONIFICATION connects with us!

Definition:

When an author uses human actions on an object, uses human feelings on an object, describing the object's mood and telling it what to do.

Example:
  • The rabbit weep into its Mother's fluffy, stained chest. He sobbed and sobbed and sobbed, first his Father, then his Brother, now his last family member, how could the giant creatures do this to his family? His tears kept falling down his furry cheeks, the salty drops of water stained the fur.
Why is it important in Language Arts?

Personification is using a character to represent a new abstract idea. Abstract ideas are hard for a lot of people to understand, since you cannot imagine them, see them, hear them or touch them! Using personification in an animal or object character helps us understand them much easier and faster that way!

SIMILE explains twins!

Definition:

A word or phrase that compare a subject with another subject, using the words like or as! Using simile to describe the similarities between two subjects.

Example:
  • His skin was as white as the clouds and cold as the snow. She brushed her fingers over his cheeks and pulled back immediately, the chilliness made her shivered and her mind caught with fear. Her face paled and her arms wrapped around her own body, her lips turned purple like grapes' skin.
Why is it important in Language Arts?

Using simile helps the author to compare the subject to a character, describing the feelings, the moods and giving out the information for the reader to visualize the picture in their heads.

EXTENDED METAPHOR allows you to get into its heart

Definition:

A metaphor that is explained and extended through a poem or a stanza. Usually have different comparisons in different subjects.

Example:
  • Her emerald eyes represented the fire in her soul, always looking fierce and strong. Ever since she was a child, her eyes helped her showing other people that she would be a strong and confident woman in the future, she needed no help. But her strong eyes did not only contained her confidence, it also held the color of the clear grass that matched perfectly with the clear blue skies. One moment her eyes will contain the fierceness, the next her eyes contain the love that only a Mother can contain.
Why is it important in Language Arts?

Extended metaphor helped the reader to have more ideas of a certain character or a certain scene without thinking critically and making a schema up in their heads. It is also super important because that way, the author could increase the vocabulary list and add up the descriptive words while explaining the character or scene effectively.

METAPHOR increases the fun in everything

Definition:

A phrase used to describe a subject, in order to show that the two things have similar qualities and similarities. This is different from comparing!

Example:
  • Her heart was made out of stone, firm, strict and hard to break. But somewhere deep inside the stone, its soft spot always seem to find its way out of the hard shell.
  • He was an exact replica of Pumbaa, all chubby and big, not to mention his friendliness and the ability of accepting and not denial.
  • Her fingers were paintbrushes on those white paper, working effectively, patiently, yet softly and silky. The way her fingers moved, the way they swayed whenever she finished an artwork.
Why is it important in Language Arts?

Metaphor also adds up to the list of 'How can you improve your imagination?' by using 2 or more different subjects to describe them without telling the audience. Metaphor will help you realize the personalities, the event or the characters of a story, the more metaphor there are, the better the story will get!

IMAGERY is super important!

Definition: Language that helps people that read or think to form images in their minds. Imagery also helps people increase their imagination and how pictures will form into their own unique ways in their minds! Imagery is a friend of descriptive words.

Example:
  • The sweet smell of apple pies lingered in the living room, dragging all the little kids into the kitchen.
  • Her eyes distanced as the sun began to set, the orangey-red color covered the skies.
  • The thumpa-thumpa continued throughout the club, people began to dance themselves onto the dance floor and followed the rhythm in their minds.
  • He licked the brown-colored popsicle on his hand, the soda taste stuck on his tongue. He moaned at the sugary sensation.
  • She reached out for the gooey subject on the table, her index finger dipped into the liquid and shivered at the coolness at the tip of her finger.
Why is it important in Language Arts?

Imagery helps people to hear, to taste, to smell, to sense, and to see whatever they are reading about. Just like my examples above, I did not tell their actions, but I described them out, helping the audience to take a look inside my mind and imagine what I was imagine. Imagery would work best with descriptive words and would help you increasing your imagination!
